Restoring Areolas for Breast Cancer Survivors

Many women who face breast cancer also alter how they view themselves. But one local woman in Abilene, Texas is helping them get there confidence back.

"Every woman that's been down this long frightening road has her own testimony and her story and she'll always have that, but it's my mission that she doesn't have to recall that each time she looks in the mirror or changes clothes in the gym," Amy Gardner, the owner of Restoration Ink of West Texas.
Amy Gardner tattoos three-dimensional areola tattoos on women who lose their breasts or have reconstruction done due to breast cancer.

Breast cancer not only causes hair loss, but for most, they have to go through a mastectomy.
The process starts with a free consultation and within two weeks, she can get the areolas tattooed. She takes about an hour and a half or so to complete the tattoo job. This process is meant to help survivor's self-esteem.

Amy Gardner also lets her patients be in the driver's seat by allowing them to choose the color, size, and placement of the areola. She tells us that it lets her clients take control of their body, again.

At the end of it, all the women get to see the results with their own eyes right after the procedure is done.
"When they get to walk over to the big mirror and see themselves, there's always happy tears. Always, every time, and each time they all tell me that it's the best thing that they didn't know that they needed," Gardner said.
She also told us that she plans to keep doing this full time and then go off and travel into Midland, Lubbock, and other surrounding areas.

KTAB/KRBC NEWS
Amy Gardner was also featured on KTAB/KRBC News during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Abilene medical tattoo artist and former nurse, Amy helps survivors by tattooing nipples on their new breasts. Her clients boast about her work, saying this service closes a difficult chapter of their life and makes them feel complete again. However, Gardner said she doesn't like to take that credit. "Wholeness only comes through Jesus, but I am thrilled to be a tool in His hand," Gardner added. Click the link to watch the inspiring stories.
